When the root of a tooth becomes infected, a root canal is necessary to remove infected pulp from deep inside the tooth. This can happen if teeth are neglected and bacteria reaches the root causing infection.
What Happens at an Appointment
A local anesthetic will be given to numb the area around the infected tooth. Using a tiny device, a small hole is made in the tooth for the tool to go in and clean out the infection. The hole is filled and a crown is placed to cover the tooth, typically completed in two appointments.
